THOUGHT
The book of Deuteronomy was written to remind the Israelites of all the things in Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers before they go into the Promise Land.  Moses wrote it all except the preamble and the report of Moses’s death, which was written by someone else.

The setting is in the Moab area where the Jordan flows into the Dead Sea.  Moses was transferring leadership and delivered his farewell addresses to prepare the people for their entrance into Canaan. These addresses were actually a covenant renewal.

You see all the people 20 years and older that left Egypt were all dead by now.  The ones who were under 20 when they left Egypt are now the ones who will go into the Promise Land. Joshua and Caleb will be the only two that came out of Egypt over 20 to go into the Promise Land. Moses emphasized the laws that were especially needed at such a time, and he presented them in a way appropriate to the situation.

The love relationship of the Lord to His people and that of the people to the Lord as their sovereign God prevail through the whole book. Deuteronomy’s spiritual emphasis and its call to total commitment to the Lord are recognized throughout the rest of Scripture.

I love this book because it teaches us much in our walk with our Lord Jesus Christ. God our Father and the Holy Spirit inspired Moses and others to record this time in the history of God.

PRAYER
Father, forgive us and open our minds and hearts as we go through Deuteronomy. Bless the Salt Shakers each and every day. In Jesus Name we pray. AMEN

THOUGHT
This chapter tells us it is the 40th year now that they have wandered and how close to the promise land they are. It tells of battles Moses led the people through and the appointment of leaders.  It also speaks of the spies sent out to check out the land God wanted them to take when they left Egypt.  Moses is retelling the story of what happened.  Moses sent people to check out the area.  They came back with very negative reports which included information that the people were too great for them.  Joshua and Caleb were the only two who came back positive.  Their disobedience made them wander in the desert 40 years.

Verse 32: ”In spite of this, you did not trust in the Lord your God, who went ahead of you on your journey, in fire by night and in a cloud by day, to search out places for you to camp and to show you the way you should go.”
Verse 34:  “When the Lord heard what you said, He was angry and solemnly swore: Not a man of this evil generation shall see the good land I swore to give your forefathers, except Caleb son of Jephunneth.”
Verse 38:  “But your assistant, Joshua son of Nun, will enter it.”

I remember after we moved here in Plattsmouth in the late 60’s the Lord told me to go wash the Pastor’s feet. I got into my car to drive to his home but did not do it because his wife scared me.  I was afraid to ask him if I could and left. I felt in my Spirit the Lord took an anointing off me because I did not obey what He told me to do. I cannot tell you how many times I have fallen so short of God’s glory. Thank God He sent His Son Jesus to take our sins on Himself so we can go forth after we ask forgiveness. Let us go forth and take the land that the devil is trying to take away from us who believe. Let us shine for Him and be those Salt Shakers for Him.

PRAYER
Father, we thank You for forgiving us of our sins daily, and picking us up to go forth for You.  Help us to be all we can be for You in this dark world. Heal all who needs healing, comfort all who has lost loved ones, and we claim in every nation for Jesus Christ in the world. Thank You, and we Praise You for what You are doing on our behalf.  AMEN

THOUGHT
In this chapter we read some more wanderings of the Israelites for God is getting them ready to take the nations. His way of doing things isn’t like we think it will be. He tells them they are not to take any of the land of Esau or Moabites because it wasn’t given to them by the Lord. Out of Lot came the Moabites.  One of his daughters had a son.  She named him Moab as she had lain with her Dad just as the younger daughter had also.

The line of Christ had Ruth in it, and she was a Moabites.  He is so forgiving and has mercy for us all.  Now Esau and the Moabites let Israel pass through but King Sihon did not.  They took him out as the Lord led them. In verse 31:  The Lord said to me, “See, I have begun to deliver Sihon and his country over to you. Now begin to conquer and possess his land.”  Verse 32: When Sihon and all his army came out to meet us in battle at Jahaz, the LORD our GOD delivered him over to us, and we struck him down, together with his sons and his whole army.

Why did they win this battle?  It was because God delivered them. If we would only learn this lesson in our lives and ask the Lord daily, “What do You have for me to do this day?” He will guide and lead us through whatever He has for us. Have I gotten there yet?  No. I cannot tell you how I dislike going to doctor’s appointments and doing something I never did before.  I am trying to get better at it and trust Him to see me through whatever His plan is.  If I had been back there in the time they were in the desert, I’d been one of the Israelites who would not have seen the promise land. That is why I’m so thankful to God for sending Jesus to take my sins on the cross and call me to Him.  Even though I fall short every day I do know that He is there for me. I need Him for everything in my life.

PRAYER
Father, Thank You for the things You teach us by Your Holy Spirit through Your Word. Help us to live it and show it to others in our walk, talk and by helping others. Teach us to pray more and to study more and to reach out more every day one way or another. May we tell people we love them and pray for them.  Be with our service men and women. We praise and thank You and to God be the glory. In Jesus Name.  AMEN

THOUGHT
We see the Lord in chapter 3 really helping His people get the land.
Verse 22:  Moses tells Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them; the Lord your God Himself will fight for you.”  He still does that today if we only ask Him to go before us. Moses again wanted to go into the land but God said no because of what he did at the water.  Numbers 20:8 God said, “Take the staff, and you and your brother Aaron gather the assembly together. SPEAK TO THE ROCK before their eyes and it will pour out its water.”  Than we go to verse 11-12: Then Moses raised his arm and STRUCK THE ROCK TWICE WITH HIS STAFF. Water gushed out, and the community and their livestock drank. But the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not trust in Me enough to honor Me as holy in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this community into the land I give them.” (He did not do what the Lord said to do) Years before when they came out of Egypt remember he struck the rock and water came forth, but this time he was to speak to it. The first time was to remind us how Christ was struck before His death, and by doing it again he was hitting our Lord in a spiritual way.

Now back to Deuteronomy Verse 25 and how he asked again to go over into the promise land.  By this time the Lord was angry and done with the discussion with Moses.  However, He did tell Moses to go to the top of Pisgah and see all the land He had given them.  Moses then commissioned Joshua and encouraged him. We do come to a time in our life when we have to let go and let others do the work for us. We will have finished the work God has sent us to do.  Because of what Christ did for us all, we can enter the Promise Land with Him.  Praise the Lord.

PRAYER
Father, forgive us when we do not obey You, but thank You for forgiving us each and every day. Heal all who needs healing and take care of us each and every day. Bless us with wisdom and open our eyes more and more to see as You see others in love. In Jesus Name we pray. AMEN

THOUGHT
Moses is talking to the tribes who are going to the Promised Land and the tribes that will remain.  Obedience is commanded to follow the laws and decrees given to them from God.  Verse 2 says, “Do not add to what I command you and do not subtract from it, but keep the commands of the Lord your God that I give you.”  Verse 9 says, “Teach them to your children and to their children alter them.”  I did also, but I have some who went the way of the world. They believe and asked Christ in but have not committed to His Lordship. I’m still praying for them.  Some though have and thank God
for that.

God makes it very clear that we should not commit idolatry.  Verses 15-31 explain that very well.  The Lord is God.  It is explained in verses 32-40 how they heard God speak to them, but did not see Him. Cities of refuge were named for the tribes in 41-43.  Moses made the introduction to the law in
44-50.

Verse 24 says, “For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.” Hebrews 12:29 says, “For our God is a consuming fire”.  It is interesting that 2 Peter 3:10 speaks of the world being destroyed by fire.  “But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare.”

He so wants us all to obey and follow Him every day.  He wants us to trust, love and read His Word and share it with others in words or deeds as we walk our daily lives.  Yes, Christ is the fulfillment of the law for us.  We need know the Word and know what our Christian walk is all about.  Tell your children, tell your family, and tell your friends and others as well.  Tell, tell and tell, but always in love and by the moving of the Holy Spirit.

PRAYER
Father, thank You for Your Holy Word to teach us Your ways not ours to follow.  Bless everyone’s weekend.  We pray for everyone in the world to know You. Put Your angels around us all. Comfort those who have lost loved ones.  Praise God for new babies and family. Open our minds and hearts to follow You always.  We need You so very much. You are an awesome God. In Jesus Name.  AMEN
